Wales number one Story wins biggest career title

James Story has won the biggest title of his tennis career.

The Welsh number one from Cardiff beat fellow Briton Anton Matusevich in a dramatic third set tie break to clinch the ITF M25 Sheffield singles title.

Story, 24, comfortably beat French top seed Clement Chidekh 6-3 6-2 to set up a semi-final against Netherlands’ Jelle Sels, which he won 6-4, 6-2.

He took the first set 6-2 against Matusevich who fought back to claim the second 6-3, and it was Story who held his nerve in the title-deciding tie-break.

Story, who began the tournament with an ATP singles ranking of 544, is now set to reach a new career-high.

His previous best career title was the M15 Monastir in Tunisia in September 2024.

Story’s success comes after a huge week for Welsh tennis, with Swansea-born Mimi Xu earning her place in the ladies singles and doubles finals at the Wrexham Open.

The tournament is the biggest tennis event to be hosted in Wales in almost 30 years.
