Sheridan County HS Cross Country/State Meet Preview: This coming Saturday is the Wyoming High School State Cross Country Meet in Cheyenne.

Of the 6 races that will take place behind the Little America Hotel, 2 of the favorites are from Sheridan County schools.

Freshman Eli Balkenbush of Sheridan won the boys race at last week’s 4A East Conference Meet at the VA Medical Facility.

He says he knows what the course is like for this weekend, because the first race of the season was held down there.

The Sheridan boys are trying to win only their 2nd state championship in school history.

The other one was back in 2019.

The Tongue River boys, like Sheridan, have only won the state championship once.

That was back in 2020.

On the girls side, Sophomore Lyla Marney of Big Horn won at last week’s 2A East Conference Meet in Dayton and was last year’s 2A State Champ.

She’s also familiar with the state meet course and explains some of the challenges that she and her team will face.

The BH girls finished tied with Tongue River for last year’s 2A state championship, but lost the tie-breaker on account that the Lady Rams did not have a 5th runner on the team.

Both the girls and boys teams’ at Big Horn have never won the state title.

The first race on Saturday is scheduled to begin at 10:30am, and new races start every half hour, with the final race starting at 1pm.

Sheridan HS Volleyball: Sheridan lost their home finale last night vs. Thunder Basin 3-1.

The Lady Broncs are scheduled to conclude the regular season this coming Friday at Campbell County.

The 4A East Regional Tournament is next week Friday and Saturday at Thunder Basin.

University of Wyoming Football: The Border War is this coming Saturday in Laramie, between the Wyoming Cowboys and Colorado State Rams.

In preparation for this week, both teams have undergone some coaching changes.

For the Cowboys, offensive coordinator and play caller Jay Johnson has been relieved of his duties, but he will remain with the team as an offensive analyst.

Taking his place will be wide receivers coach and former Poke Jovon Bouknight.

The Rams fired Head Coach Jay Norvell this past weekend and named defensive coordinator Tyson Summers as his interim replacement.

Brown and Gold Head Coach Jay Sawvel says despite what has changed with CSU, he does not expect much change in how the opposition plays, which statistically is pretty close to Wyoming in many categories.

Kickoff in Laramie is scheduled for 5:30pm.

This game will mark the last time the 2 teams will play each other, as members of the Mountain West Conference.

CSU will be part of the PAC-12 next year.

UW and Colorado State did sign an 8-year deal to continue playing for the Bronze Boot from 2028 until 2035, and recently extended that deal by 2 years.

The 2 teams will be each other’s first game of the season next year in Fort Collins, after UW was able to move a home game next year with North Texas to 2034.

On the other end of the deal, in 2036 the Rams will make another visit to Laramie.

Long story short, the 2 teams will play each other every year but 1, between 2026 and 2036.

That one year is 2027.

Colorado Avalanche Hockey: The Colorado Avalanche lost last night at Utah 4-3 in overtime.

The Mammoth needed only 33 seconds of the extra period to win it.

The Avs next play tomorrow at home vs. Carolina.
