Tokyo Olympian Pranati Nayak’s campaign at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships 2025 in Jakarta came to an abrupt end after she suffered an ankle injury during the qualifying round on Tuesday.

Competing in the women’s vault qualification at the Indonesia Arena, Pranati landed awkwardly on her first attempt and withdrew from the competition before her second vault.

“She went for the Tsukahara 720 Twist with a fixed landing but had a deep landing and fell. As a result, she has an ankle sprain,” her coach Ashok Mishra told the Times of India from Jakarta.

The Tsukahara 720 Twist is the same move which had earlier earned the 30-year-old Indian gymnast a bronze medal at the Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships in the Republic of Korea in June.

Pranati had also clinched a vault bronze at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics Apparatus World Cup in Antalya earlier this year.

India fielded a nine-member contingent – five men and four women – at this year’s championships, but none advanced to the finals after failing to make the top eight of their respective events.

In the women’s category, Swastika Ganguly placed 33rd in vault qualification and 121st in balance beam, while Anoushka Patil finished 78th in the all-around.

Bidisha Gayen, who competed on the uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise, also fell short of qualification in all three.

Among the men, Tapan Mohanty finished 83rd on floor, followed by Yogeshwar Singh (113th) and Tapeswaranath Das (117th).

Harikrishnan JS finished 68th on pommel horse. In vault, Yogeshwar Singh was 43rd and Das 76th out of 116 competitors, while Shayan Sharma ranked 95th in the horizontal bar.

India are yet to win a medal at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. Dipa Karmakar came closest in 2015, finishing fifth in the women’s vault final.

The World Artistic Gymnastics Championships 2025 will conclude on Saturday.
