DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) – When signing a check means the most, a local credit union gave back to the Twin Ports community on Tuesday.
Affinity Plus Credit Union gave out $60,000 in grants to help support local nonprofits.
One of those recipients, the Duluth Community School Collaborative, received $10,000. Money they’ll put toward their food shelf at Denfeld High school.
Josie Fobbe, the Community Health Coordinator for the Duluth Community School Collaborative, says it’ll be great to be able expand their Hunter Hut food shelf by providing more fresh produce, which has been around for more than 20 years.
“We were really looking for funding to help us expand the food shelf and be able to meet the needs that we were seeing in our community and the things that people were asking for us to be able to supply,” Fobbe said.
Affinity Plus also gave out money to other organizations including Life House and One Roof, organizations that help with community housing struggles.
Amanda Bruggman, the Branch Manager at Affinity Plus in Duluth, says its empowering to be bale to give back and help these organizations with their work.
“When we bring in a little bit, when other places bring in a little bit, it makes the operations who are boots on the ground, so much more,” Bruggman said.
Compared to last year, Affinity gave out just $25,000, almost doubling their pot this year.
