The second week of the high school football season in Alabama brought plenty of intriguing results as the rankings begin to take shape moving into September.

Despite a tough loss to nationally-ranked Grayson (Ga.), Thompson remains atop the state rankings. Vestavia Hills and Hewitt-Trussville check in at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, and the pair will now throw down this Friday.

Three other ranked matchups are on the docket this week, too. Below are the top 25 teams in Alabama after week two, according to the Massey Ratings.

Thompson dropped a tight game at home to Grayson last season and looked to exact revenge in Georgia last week. Many thought that task would end up being easy for the Warriors after it was announced that Grayson would be without star senior quarterback Travis Burgess for the remainder of the season. Instead, the Rams rallied and found a way to win a 24-23 overtime battle. Thompson junior QB Trent Seaborn threw for three touchdowns in the loss. Optimism in Alabaster remains strong as Thompson looks to bounce back with a home game against Tuscaloosa County this week.

Vestavia Hills‘ 2-0 start looks especially strong. The Rebels hosted top-10 Auburn last Thursday and barged its way toward an impressive 42-14 victory. That performance was led by junior signal-caller Charlie Taaffe, who threw for 233 yards and a touchdown in addition to rushing for 96 yards and two more scores. Vestavia Hills has cleared 40 points in each of its first two games this season and another big test is on the horizon this Friday as it heads to new No. 3 Hewitt-Trussville. The Rebels are amidst a vicious early-season schedule and have come out unscathed thus far.

The first real test for Hewitt-Trussville comes this week as it welcomes Vestavia Hills to town. The Huskies have mushed their way to two dominant victories thus far — a 54-0 drubbing of JAG and a 56-7 road thumping of Gadsden City. In the win over Gadsden last week, the Huskies rushed for an elephantine 586 yards, per MaxPreps. Eight different players rushed for 40 or more yards.

After a big-time season-opening victory over top-25 Jackson, Saraland had no hangover in week two and smoked Blount 46-0. The Spartans’ defense has allowed just 6 total points through two games. Anthonio Brown had three rushing touchdowns in the win last week while star Duke wide receiver commit DeShawn Spencer notched a TD catch. Saraland welcomes Gulf Shores this week and is currently favored to win each of the remaining eight games on its regular-season schedule, per the Massey Ratings.

On the road for the second week in a row, Central was on the ropes in Orlando. Down 28-10 in the second half, the Red Devils rallied with three unanswered touchdowns, took the lead in the fourth quarter and fended off a late surge from The First Academy (Fla.) to pick up a gritty 38-35 win. Junior QB Bobby Coleman threw for 300 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Central now gears up for its home debut in Phenix City this week against Smiths Station.

Scoring came rather easy for Clay-Chalkville in its 64-0 smothering of Ramsay last week. Senior running back Joshua Woods and sophomore QB Cornelius Eldridge each rushed for two touchdowns in the win. Seven of the Cougars’ nine TDs came on the ground. Clay-Chalkville has coasted thus far and it now welcomes Pell City to town this week. A Sept. 19 clash vs. Brandon (Miss.) looms large later this month.

After suffering a season-opening loss to Florida powerhouse IMG Academy, Hoover had another tough test on deck in facing Spain Park on the road. Spearheaded by new Florida State commit Jonah Winston, the Buccaneers picked up a huge 21-10 win. Winston intercepted a pass late in the fourth quarter to seal the deal. Hoover QB Kaleb Freeman threw for three TDs in the victory. The gauntlet continues to the Bucs this week as they return to home and host No. 14 Hillcrest.

Auburn suffered a humbling 42-14 loss on the road to No. 2 Vestavia Hills and now sits at 1-1. The Tigers’ focus immediately turns toward one of, if not the biggest rivalry in the state. Auburn and No. 11 Opelika will square off for the 100th time this Friday. The Tigers lead the all-time series 49-47-3. Junior QB Cason Myers will get his first taste of the rivalry after transferring to Auburn this offseason.

The run game has been strong for Parker so far and that was evident as it piled up 311 rushing yards in a 27-11 ranked win over Mountain Brook last week. Seniors Chancellor Sparks and Isaiah Miles combined for 275 on the ground and two touchdowns across 30 carries. The Thundering Herd have now won 12 games in a row. The last team to bet them was Carrollton (Ga.) last season. The two will rematch later this month on Sept. 19.

Enterprise went on the road and picked up a spirited 24-17 win over Pike Road, the No. 29 team in the state, to improve to 2-0 on the year. The Wildcats have a stout schedule that doesn’t let up all fall and No. 26 Dothan now heads to town this week. Senior Mason Burkhardt threw for 148 yards and rushed for 62 and two scores in the Pike Road victory. Hayes Woodall led the Enterprise defense with 11 tackles.
