DOOR COUNTY, Wis. (WBAY) – The Boys and Girls Club of Door County looking to break their record from last year during their celebrity golf outing.
Over $200,000 was raised last summer with the proceeds going to help children in the region with resources and food insecurity.
This year’s celebrities include Packer alumni including Mark Murphy and Jerry Kramer, and Captain Phillips, whose survival after being taken hostage by Somali pirates was made into a movie starring Tom Hanks.
These Packer alum and celebrities are all “fore” helping charity with a record-breaking amount raised last year the organizers for 16th Annual Celebrity Golf Outing at horseshoe bay hope to surpass that.
“Last year we raised over $200,000 in one day and we’re hoping to beat that record and really make sure the club is set up to help even more kids,” said Johanna Wicklund, CEO of Boys & Girls Club of the Bay & Lakes Region.
In attendance, Packer alum to help pull in that star power, Jerry Kramer, has supported this event for over a decade. Saying it’s grown over the years and while he won’t be golfing this round, he still wants to be part of the event and help.
“Everybody here is here because they want to be here and they want to help out and they want to make a difference. that’s a great atmosphere to be in,” said Jerry Kramer, former Packers guard.
Mark Murphy tells us though he’s just retired he makes time for this event because he loves a chance to golf and give back.
“I’m trying to keep fairly busy but events like this are great supporting a great cause,” said Mark Murphy, former Packers President & CEO.
Captain Phillips said he’s spent plenty of time in Wisconsin visiting his brother in Madison. He loves this area and is honored to support this cause, saying he doesn’t feel like a celebrity, but he’s happy to help.
“It’s important for the kids and that’s why I’m here. I was invited by Julie and Guy Anderstruck to come up and I said sure it’d be a great event,” said Captain Richard Phillips.
The day starts with golf followed by a dinner with a live auction. There are opportunities to donate throughout the day. Over 130 golfers are in attendance this year.
