Cat rescue in SAW region becomes a nonprofit

STUARTS DRAFT, Va. (WHSV) – A cat rescue in the Staunton, Augusta County and Waynesboro area became a nonprofit this spring.

The rescue, called “A Cat Lady in Training,” is a foster home-based rescue that has focused on cats for the past few years. President Cyrene Brummage said the rescue has about 15 animals in its care.

“I was kind of raised up in it, and I have always had a passion for helping animals and working with animals,” Brummage said, “especially special needs animals, which is a lot of our intakes.”

Brummage said the rescue prioritizes special needs intakes because there are few who are equipped to do that and want to provide that service. The shelter has opened up to help other small animals as well, like guinea pigs, dogs and rabbits, Brummage said, to “help give animals a chance that they would not otherwise have.”

Brummage said the rescue became a nonprofit earlier this year, which allows the organization to apply for grant funding.

“Donations are now tax-deductible for people who donate to our rescue organization, and it also helps allows us navigating the future with pulling animals from the shelter as well,” Brummage said.

If you are interested in adoption, Brummage said to fill out an application to meet one of the rescue’s foster animals.
