RACINE — The Racine community will come together Saturday, Aug. 23, to celebrate Willow Newell, the first African American woman crowned Miss Wisconsin, as she prepares to represent the state at the upcoming Miss America competition.

The event will take place at Washington Park High School, Newell’s alma mater, and will feature music, guest speakers, and opportunities for residents to show their support. Proceeds will help fund her journey to the national stage, where she will compete on Sept. 7.

A Historic Milestone

Newell’s win marks a historic moment for Wisconsin pageantry. Community leaders have praised her for breaking barriers while serving as a role model for young people across the state.

“Willow Newell represents the best of Racine — courage, intelligence, and the determination to inspire future generations,” said Grace Allen, District 9 alderman and first vice president of the NAACP-Racine Branch. “This event is a chance for our entire community to stand behind Willow and celebrate the history she is making.”

Advocate and Role Model

Beyond the pageant spotlight, Newell is known for her advocacy work promoting the Art of Belonging, a platform focused on inclusion and representation. She has spoken frequently about the importance of creating spaces where all people feel seen and valued.

Her upcoming appearance at Miss America provides not only an opportunity for personal achievement but also a platform to highlight issues of representation on a national stage.
