Charleston leaders seek input on historic architecture along peninsula

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – For the first time in nearly 40 years, the City of Charleston is updating its architectural inventory on the peninsula and city leaders are asking for the public’s help.

The City has partnered with a consulting firm for cultural resources to launch a historic resources survey aimed at identifying and documenting historically or architecturally significant properties that may not have been previously recognized.

The first phase of the project, made possible through grant funding, will focus on African American heritage sites in downtown Charleston.

As part of the effort, a public meeting will be held Monday night to present the findings of the African American Historic Resource Survey. During the meeting, the consulting firm will walk attendees through the process of how the survey was conducted and the methodology used.

A component of the survey allows participants to help evaluate structures using a four-tier classification system: exceptional, excellent, significant or contributory.

City leaders say community input is critical in identifying sites that should be preserved, maintained and protected.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Charleston County Public Library on Calhoun Street.
