Shortly after the Dallas Cowboys recorded their first win of the season on Sunday, owner Jerry Jones shared some good news. To provide much-needed depth to the team’s defense, Dallas signed veteran pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported.

“He’ll add some real depth. He’s very credible. He’ll help us,” Jones said, per The Athletic’s Jon Machota.

This is encouraging news for the Cowboys defense after their thrilling 40-37 overtime win over the New York Giants. Clowney’s addition could help limit opposing offenses from putting up big numbers down the stretch.

On Wednesday, Clowney visited the Cowboys but left without signing a contract. Bryan Broaddus of 105.3 The Fan reported: “The Cowboys wanted to sign Clowney. Clowney’s the one who made this decision. He said he’d like to wait.”

Last season, Clowney played for the Carolina Panthers. He recorded 46 combined tackles, 5.5 sacks, 11 QB hits and nine tackles for loss in 14 games.

In 140 career games over 11 seasons, the 2014 NFL draft’s No. 1 pick has recorded 58 sacks.
