One of my favorite phrases is “Shenanigans ensued.” I exploit it rather a lot in writing and in real life. When I’m telling a story, I really like to say this phrase right before I get to the great things – when the story takes a whole left turn into WTFsville, just like the night one of my friends and I were kidnapped off the road or Richmond, Virginia in 2006. There was intrigue; we got home safely and agreed to make other decisions out of town.
The thing is, I really like this term and use it often. But recently I noticed that perhaps I used to be using it flawed. Or perhaps on the flawed time and within the flawed circumstances. Having already seen the primary 4 episodes of the brand new BET+ show, “Diarra from Detroit” and THIS show is literally the definition of “accidents that happened.” I used to be part of some absolute nonsense in my life; Diarra Brickland (Diarra Kilpatrick) is a roller coaster though WHY?!?!? She, along along with her overly lenient and helpful homies Aja (DomiNque Perry), Mr. Tea (Bryan Terrell Clark), and Moni (Claudia Logan) are the living embodiment of doing all of your best.
And let me inform you something. I absolutely love this show. I used to be captivated after the primary 10 minutes. But let me inform you what it is.
Oh, so boom. Diarra Brickland is a soon-to-be divorcee who hasn’t been capable of sleep well since she broke up along with her ex, Swa (played by Morris Chestnut). She meets a man on a dating app and so they have a tremendous date and romp; he puts her to sleep for the primary time in months. She nicknames it Ambien and is into it. There’s just one problem. He embodies it (or does he?) and it sends her into crime detective mode to search out out why he was scaring her. He has a bit of an extreme personality. What happens next can only be described in two words: shenanigans ensue.
Diarra eventually decides that the date that has been haunting her is actually a little bit boy kidnapped from a Detroit mall in 1995, and sets out to search out the person we come to learn… was kidnapped – twice? Maybe? Who knows? We’re only 4 episodes in and I don’t know what direction the show is heading from episode to episode. Oh, did I mention that Diarra is a middle school teacher? And it takes place in Detroit, so there are robberies, shootings, snow, and much of mentions of “that’s D!” There are naked Russians and John Salley. Yes, former Detroit Piston John Salley.
Oh, and Phylicia Rashad plays the character he slept with your complete original Temptations lineup.
Diarra Kilpatrick, the author and executive producer of the series, is great within the fundamental role. Her comedic timing and commitment to the role are as follows: * And despite the completely random (thus far) nature of the show, the best way it is written, encompassing family drama, work drama, and her obsession with finding the person who has been stalking her, is truly one of the more enjoyable TV-watching experiences I’ve ever had. Plus, I do know the show is going somewhere; I’m fully committed to bringing this matter to a conclusion. It’s a wonder I do not hear more people talking about this since it really had me hooked from the very first scenes.
Honestly, I appreciate my friends. I’m not saying I’ve ever tried to drive into Detroit on the lookout for a girl who hasn’t called me back, but I’ve never been in that situation during a divorce either. I believe anything is possible. However, I actually have a bunch of friends who value history and the chance of achieving greatness, even when tragedy is involved. We were part of some absolute nonsense simply to have a story to inform. It’s the kind of continuing life that makes life value living.
I do not know if you might have BET+ – I stream on Amazon Prime – and truthfully, I don’t know if I’m paying for it or not, but Detroit Diarra is the kind of show I wish more people would see since it’s funny, well played and wild enough to impress you with the writing skills of Diarra Kilpatrick, who hails from Detroit and, yes, is Kwame Kilpatrick’s sister, so I’m going to ride BET+ until this show ends. It’s fresh and fun; what number of crime movies contain scenes wherein the fundamental character drives through the town and hits Eminem to release his aggression? Only one involves mind.
I travel with Diarra.
