Extant was received well by critics, and the show managed to fascinate a large section of the fanbase with its offbeat premise. But it ended up being canceled before Season 3. So, why did CBS decide to axe this sci-fi drama? Here is a breakdown.

Extant followed Molly Woods, an astronaut with ISEA, as she took a 13-month solo trip to space that changed the course of history. The fascinating premise utilizes known sci-fi tropes along with big existential questions, leading to a very exciting end result that would please fans of the genre.

But the show continued to suffer from poor viewership. From the start of the show, it failed to capture the number of audiences it should have with the kind of star power it had. Reports state that there were numerous decisions made due to poor viewership before the show was ultimately taken off the air. This included merging two episodes together and rescheduling.

The cancellation was a planned one, as the show did not leave fans completely unfulfilled. While there could have been more, the series concluded with answers to some of the very pivotal questions. The story ended on a conclusive note, and it was quite clear that CBS decided to wrap things up for good before the series ended. Of course, there could have been much more to the story if the viewership numbers were good.

The then-CBS Entertainment president Glenn Geller said in a statement about the cancellation, “CBS, Halle Berry, and the producers have decided to conclude the Extant story after last season’s exciting and fitting conclusion. Extant played an important role in expanding CBS’s lineup of original scripted programming in the summer.”

He added, “We are proud of the show’s success on the network, as well as its popularity on Amazon Prime Video. We also want to thank the incomparable Halle Berry for her commitment and support for the series, and look forward to working with her on our next project together.”

Extant is available for streaming on Netflix and Paramount+ in the U.S.
