BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Inside the pulpit of a Baton Rouge church, Pastor Erroll Domingue feels right at home.
It’s where he builds bonds and trust within his community, which is the same mission shared by the people gathered in prayer inside his sanctuary.
“We really all need each other,” Domingue said.
Domingue believes the work of faith leaders and law enforcement isn’t all that different.
He said both are dedicated to service and community safety, and that pastors often serve as a crucial bridge between residents and law enforcement, helping address concerns and promote understanding.
That shared mission brought both groups together for a special event called “Faith in Blue” at Elm Grove Baptist Church. The gathering aimed to strengthen trust between the public and the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office through conversation and connection.
“We’re just happy to bring people together and show them what community really looks like,” Domingue said.
Building trust, however, doesn’t happen overnight.
“Sometimes it’s hard, but hey, we know what we signed up for,” said Cpl. Brandon Jones with the sheriff’s office.
Jones said progress starts with understanding and mutual respect.
“Ultimately, we just have to give each other a chance,” Jones said. “Once we do that, we can gain an understanding of what we’re trying to build, and everything will work out for the better, one day at a time.”
Domingue echoed that same message of unity.
“All of this works together so that all of us can live a fulfilled life,” he said.
The Faith in Blue initiative is part of a nationwide effort to connect faith-based organizations and law enforcement agencies, fostering collaboration and trust within communities.
