Frenship Tiger graduate chasing dreams of sports journalism, with help from Patrick Mahomes

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Brayden Tomlinson has always had a passion for sports.

While he could not play due to a heart defect, It didn’t stop him from making his mark in Frenship TV and Broadcasting.

“Just being engaged in the sport, I wasn’t allowed to play, and so just feeling I can be part of the game is what keeps me going in sports broadcasting,” Brayden said. “I’m part of the game somehow, and that’s what I’m most passionate about.”

Brayden looked to continue his dream of sports broadcasting in college, with help from a scholarship funded by Patrick Mahomes.

“I have a sports background and I want to do sports for career, and Patrick Mahomes being who Patrick Mahomes is, I thought I might have a chance,” Brayden said. “The hard work and devotion that I have done in high school, that has led me to college, I just hope that would help in that scholarship.”

Molly Arellano, a media teacher at Frenship High School, says the sky’s the limit for Brayden.

“I’m excited to say one day that one of my students is working with ESPN because I think that’s where he can go. I think he can go all the way,” Arellano said. “He is so good at seeing things and predicting things, just by research he is just so cool about that, but I think he can go all the way to being big time and on a national stage somewhere eventually.”

Brayden says the best piece of advice he has received is to always be looking for opportunities, and to never let one pass by.

“Never say no to an opportunity. There are always opportunities and when there is, just always go at them,” Brayden said. “Because it’s just another chance to gain experience and advice, and you never know.”

Brayden will start his first day at Texas Tech pursuing a major in journalism with a certification in sports media.

He dreams of one day commentating for the Texas Rangers.
