FRANKFORT, Ky. (WBKO) — A Glasgow native has been sworn in as the new sheriff of Franklin County, Kentucky, following the retirement of the previous sheriff.

Dwayne Depp was sworn in by Franklin County Judge/Executive Michael Mueller. He succeeded Chris Quire, who left the office before his term was expired.

Depp is a member of the Glasgow High School Hall of Fame and finished second in balloting for Mr. Kentucky Football in 1988.

The State Journal reports he was a running back with Murray State University. He was named Rookie of the Year following his first season.

Among his accomplishments, he was a post commander in Morehead with Kentucky State Police before retiring in 2009, held several roles in former Gov. Matt Bevin’s administration, and was most recently chief deputy of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

Depp became Franklin County’s first African American sheriff when he took office Aug. 1.
