(TNS) — A new online portal and database of state-registered charitable organizations is intended make it easier for people to find more information about charities and their finances, according to the Office of the Illinois Attorney General.
The portal has about 35,000 charitable organizations registered so far, with another 150 to 200 filing for registration monthly, according to the office.
The office’s Charitable Trust Bureau is tasked with ensuring nonprofits comply with state law.
“Potential donors in Illinois have a right to know about charitable organizations before donating, including how their donations will be spent,” Attorney General Kwame Raoul said. “The updated Charitable Trust Database gives the public enhanced access to real-time information on charities they are considering supporting.”
Some paperwork required of nonprofits also is easier to file via the portal, according to the office.
Forms, reports and fee payments that previously had to be submitted via traditional mail now can be accessed via a separate portal.
The charities search portal is available atcharitable.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov/search.
