THIS GROUP HERE PACKING UP DIAPERS, IS ONE OF 40 DIFFERENT GROUPS HERE IN THE METRO THAT’S LENDING A FEW HELPING HANDS ON THIS ANNUAL DAY OF CARING. NEARLY 500 VOLUNTEERS SPENT FRIDAY WORKING WITH 28 NONPROFITS THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY, FILLING FOOD BAGS, DOING YARD WORK AND PAINTING. EMPLOYEES FROM BLUE CROSS BLUE SHIELD HAVE BEEN VOLUNTEERING FOR SEVERAL YEARS NOW. THEY SAY IT’S A GREAT CHANCE TO GET OUT OF THE OFFICE WHILE SUPPORTING A GREAT MISSION. WE HAVE A GOOD TIME, YOU KNOW, THEY KEEP US PRETTY BUSY, BUT WE REALLY DO ENJOY GETTING TOGETHER AND DOING SOMETHING OUTSIDE OF WORK AND SUPPORTING A GOOD CAUSE. ORGANIZERS SAY THE EVENT COULDN’T COME AT A BETTER TIME FOR LOCAL NONPROFITS. THERE’S BEEN A LOT OF FEDERAL AND STATE CUTS, AND SO NONPROFITS ARE TRYING TO DO MORE WITH LESS SO PEOPLE CAN COME SHARE THEIR ENERGY AND TIME TO HELP FILL IN FOR PROJECTS. Nearly 500 volunteers in Omaha spent Friday working with 28 nonprofits, filling food bags, doing yard work, and painting as part of an annual day of caring. Employees from Blue Cross and Blue Shield have been volunteering for several years now, and they say it’s a great chance to get out of the office while supporting a great mission. “We have a good time, you know? They keep us pretty busy, but we really do, enjoy getting together and doing something outside of work and supporting a good cause,” Leah Bond said.Organizers said the event couldn’t come at a better time for local nonprofits. “There’s been a lot of federal and state cuts. And so nonprofits are trying to do more with less so people can come share their energy and time to help fill in for projects.
