INDIANAPOLIS — The Department of Metropolitan Development just announced a new round of applications for eligible nonprofits to help address the growing issue of homelessness in Indianapolis.

It’s called the 2026 Emergency Solutions Grant, or ESG. Last year, over $650,000 was handed out to different nonprofits.

Allies For Humanity on Fall Creek Parkway is hoping to be one of the nonprofits earning some of the funding this year.

“We offer a light breakfast. We offer a hot meal. Case management, connection to resources and clothing closet,” executive director KT White said.

White has helped run the grassroots nonprofit for the last three years.

“Our average right now it’s like 10-14 people, which is low for us,” White said.

But thanks to a new grant opportunity with the city, she’s hoping to expand their operations.

“It’s something that is life or death,” White said. “The ESG grant would allow us to get somebody back out on the street to support our direct outreach efforts.”

“This place means the world to me. It’s a safe place,” added Susan Richart.

Richart was without a place to call home earlier this year. She came to Allies for Humanity daily until she was back on her feet.

“I come here for the quiet, the peace of mind,” Richart said. “The not being judged and being loved and accepted for simply being human and who I am.”

A place with no judgements that White hopes to keep up and running for a long time to come.

“My family has given everything to this mission, literally everything,” White said. “That’s also why funding like the ESG is important to for us to keep the work going and for other small organizations that are grassroot in our community to continue to support our unhoused neighbors.”

Nonprofits have until Oct. 6, 2025 to apply. The chosen organizations will get the grant and sign the contract in April 2026.
