Seven months after announcing their separation, Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson surprised fans as they reunited for a Vegas-bound flight on Friday, August 29. In photos shared by TMZ and Page Six, the estranged couple—who announced they were pumping the brakes on their 10-year marriage in January—were spotted sitting together on a Southwest airplane from Burbank without their kids.

The “I Wanna Love You Forever” singer could be seen wearing her long blonde hair in a Y2K-approved deep middle part, paired with large silver hoop earrings and a red sweatshirt. Sitting in the aisle seat with the middle seat empty between them, Johnson opted for a black baseball cap and a black t-shirt. In a video shared by TMZ, Simpson and Johnson stayed mum when they were asked by a reporter if their joint outing meant they were back together, but the former football player could be seen smiling when the person filming the clip said it was good to see the pair together. The fashion designer revealed that she and Johnson are in Vegas for the first night of her sister Ashlee Simpson’s residency.

Simpson and Johnson’s surprise outing comes after the Dukes of Hazzard actress revealed that she is “ready” to date again during a Today Show interview in late July. Admitting she was “slightly terrified” of the prospect of getting back out in the dating scene, Simpson told host Jenna Bush Hager, “My type of person is one-of-a-kind. I don’t have, like, a look or anything like that. I just like for somebody to be individually who they are and exude confidence without the ego.”

The star also told Bush Hager that she and Johnson actually split “almost two years” ago, although she shared a statement revealing that the couple—who share kids Maxwell, 13, Ace, 12, and Birdie, 6—“have been living separately, navigating a painful situation in our marriage” at the start of this year.

A “heartbroken” Simpson revealed that she coped with the aftermath of the split with music, resulting in her albums Nashville Canyon, Pt. 1 and Nashville Canyon, Pt. 2. “In the face of heartbreak, in the face of life completely changing, music saved my life,” Simpson shared. Later on during the interview, she explained, “I thought I was going to be doing this inspirational type of record and it ended up leaning more towards, ‘How do I get through this moment because my whole life just completely changed while making this record,’ and it became something I never would have expected. But there’s blessings in the pain. You can find beauty in the pain.”
