Local nonprofit opens new home for mothers

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Local nonprofit Prepare for Babies had been waiting for months to open its new maternity home, and on Sunday, they cut the ribbon.

The nonprofit helps expecting parents get ready for their new bundle of joy.

They provide clothes, diapers, nursing supplies, along with mentorship and counseling.

Since January, they’ve been able to prepare this house with everything a new mother needs.

The nonprofit says they’ve helped more than 300 mothers, and of them, 110 expressed a need for housing.

“So we just want to walk alongside of them and give them that encouragement and build them up and let them know that you can sustain your family and you can sustain a good life for yourself as well. And so we’ll teach them the tools, and they can gather those tools, put them in their toolbox. And then when they do move out of the house, they can apply them,” said Mandy and Rushton Meltzer, Prepare for Babies.

Moms who live in the house will be able to stay until the baby is 18 months, and even after leaving, moms can continue to receive support.
