LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – Texas A&M International University is inviting the community to kick off its fall athletics season with a free Dustdevil sports kickoff party this Saturday, August 30.
Marilyn Bautista, assistant director of athletic development and external affairs at TAMIU, said the event is a chance for fans to meet athletes from the university’s fall sports programs, including volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, and cross country.
“All our athletes are already back, and we miss them dearly,” Bautista said. “We want to invite the community to come and meet them in a very casual, fun setting.”
The party will be held at the Golondrina food truck park from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Attendees can enjoy food trucks, take photos with the university mascot Dusty, and participate in a Dusty dance-off with prizes for Dustdevil swag. A DJ and cheerleaders will also be on hand.
Bautista emphasized the importance of community support for TAMIU athletes, many of whom come from Laredo or other cities and represent the university at the collegiate level. “These kids leave their families and their significant others to come and represent our community,” she said. “It’s really nice to see the community come and watch them at the games.”
TAMIU offers affordable tickets to sporting events, with prices starting at $7. The kickoff party is part of a broader effort to engage fans and create opportunities for the public to connect with student-athletes outside the competitive arena.
