Morning sports: a power-ful racer

WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – Jessica Power is a talented driver in the Sportsman class at Can-Am Speedway.

Power, from Kingston, Ontario, showed her talent a couple of weeks ago with back to back feature wins.

Power ended a drought by winning both on Friday night and then again the next night at her two home tracks. The 23 year veteran with the last 18 driving the Sportsman is happy to visit the winner’s circle not once but twice.

” So we were fortunate enough to get the win here (at Can-Am) Friday night and then again at our other home track, Brockville, on Saturday night,“ Power said.

“We hadn’t won here in six years and hadn’t won at Brockville in three years. It was a bit of a dry spell at both places but we’re super thankful to get both in one weekend,” Power said.

Power hopes the momentum will lead to big things later in the season.

“Absolutely, We’ve been having a decent season. You know, top five, top ten, some solid wins. But getting those wins, it gives everybody a lot of confidence, it puts a little bit of pep back in your step. It gives you the drive and the ambition you may have lost a little bit over the last couple of years, so we’re really excited about what the fall has to bring,” Power said.

Jessica is now concentrating on what October brings this year in Oswego, and the race track there.

Oh yeah, we’re going to go to Super Dirt Week this year. We’ve got some pretty exciting, ambitious plans this year for Super Dirt Week. We’ll race the Sportsman – obviously that’s a points race for us. And this year we are going to take our small block, attempt to qualify in the small block race as well,“ Power said.

Power likes what Can-Am has to offer, especially the size of the track.

” I like big tracks. I’m a big fan of Oswego and Mohawk, Charlotte. Can-Am has always been kind to me and I really like racing here. It was one of the first places I came when I got my Sportsman Car – Lots of room. You can stretch your legs and race hard when no one’s on top of each other. That’s the kind of place I like to race.“

Jessica Power relies on a very good group of sponsors to get her on the track each week, listing them off for us. Some of them are “Greenshield pest control, Mobil One, Genex, Speedy Auto Service, Shocker Hitch.“
