Newport Mayor Charlie Holder will trade his gavel for a cocktail shaker next week when he joins other local celebrities behind the bar for a fundraising event benefiting the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.

The Newport Elks Lodge #104 will host “Pouring for a Purpose: Celebrity Bartender Night” on Thursday, Sept. 18, from 4-7 p.m. at 141 Pelham Street. The event will raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association in support of the Newport Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

Holder will face off against City Councilor Xaykham Khamsyvoravong in the evening’s opening competition at 4 p.m. Olympic medalist Elizabeth Beisel and several Elks Lodge members will take turns bartending throughout the night, with each participant competing in hourly tip battles.

All bartender tips, donations and proceeds from a signature purple drink will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. Allen’s Wine & Spirits of Portsmouth is sponsoring the signature cocktail.

“This campaign not only raises essential funds but also builds visibility for the Newport Walk to End Alzheimer’s,” said Joe Trilling, president of the Newport Elks Lodge. “It’s about rallying together as a community to support those impacted and to show that Newport is committed to being part of the solution.”

The evening’s lineup includes three hourly competitions. At 5 p.m., Beisel will compete against Elks members Joe Trilling and Myke Hurley. The final hour-long competition at 6 p.m. will feature Elks member JoAnne Ritchie against Emily Lyons and Laura Murphy. Tait Applegate will bartend throughout the entire evening.

Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias affect numerous families across Newport and Rhode Island, according to the lodge.
