India’s highest court has drawn a firm line under years of speculation about Vantara, the country’s sprawling wildlife rescue and breeding facility backed by Reliance, ruling that it not only complies with Indian and international law but in many respects surpasses global welfare standards.

In a judgment delivered September 15, a copy of which was accessed by Newsweek, the Supreme Court said it had “no hesitation in accepting the conclusion” of a Special Investigation Team that examined Vantara’s animal acquisitions, finances, and conservation practices. After working with agencies ranging from India’s Central Zoo Authority to the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau and international CITES authorities, the team reported “no violation of law whatsoever.”

The Court endorsed that finding in unusually emphatic terms. “Once the imports of animals is fully documented and supported by valid permits,” the document read, “it is not open for anyone to go beyond the said permits and to dispute the validity.” The ruling also warned against a cycle of petitions, calling repeated allegations “wholly unjustified and an abuse of the process.”

At the heart of the order is animal welfare. The judgement noted they were “more than satisfied” that Vantara’s facilities exceeded benchmarks for veterinary care and husbandry. They pointed to the center’s independent Global Humane Certified Seal of Approval, a credential that resonates with third-party welfare audits.

For Vantara officials, the judgment was more than a legal victory. “This is not just about compliance — it’s about compassion,” said Vivaan Karani, CEO of Vantara informed Newsweek. “Our only goal is to give animals, from elephants to endangered birds, a life of dignity and security.”

Amit Agarwal, Vantara’s head of regulatory affairs, emphasized the breadth of the scrutiny. “The SIT worked with every major enforcement agency, and not a single violation was found. That level of oversight would stand up anywhere in the world.”

By closing the door to further litigation, the Court has effectively given Vantara a clean slate.
