CLEARWATER — Simply Healthcare Plans hosted an awards gala last month honoring representatives of local nonprofit organizations for their work in the community.

The Simply the Best Awards Gala, titled “Making Waves of Impact, Honoring Champions of Change,” was held at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium on the evening of Sept. 26. Formally attired attendees were treated to dinner, dancing and a photo booth as well as emotional words from the award winners.

According to Takara Fuller Doby, a territory manager for the company that provides affordable health plans and medical insurance for Florida families and residents, the gala’s intent was to “celebrate and honor the tireless work of nonprofit organizations and community leaders across Pinellas County who are creating positive change.”

“Nonprofits play a vital role in meeting community needs — providing critical services, supporting families, and driving lasting change,” she said. “The Simply the Best Awards Gala shines a spotlight on these unsung heroes, offering well-deserved recognition and inspiring future collaboration across the county.”

Fuller Doby noted their third annual gala was unique in several ways, including the iconic waterfront venue and the fact it was hosted by a company in an industry that’s not known for community involvement.

“Insurance companies aren’t looked at in the best light,” she acknowledged. “But our team does things differently — we give back, recognize, and work with the community businesses and nonprofits. We genuinely care about people and our members.”

The care for the nonprofits was evident when representatives came to the front of the room to receive their awards.

Among the two dozen nominees were Ada Del Guis, executive director of the Shepherd Center in Tarpon Springs, and Malika McCluster, the CEO of the Clearwater Neighborhood Family Center.

First place went to Dennis Drolet, a Seminole resident who works at the Abundant Life Ministries in Largo, while Mhariel Summers of the Pinellas County Urban League finished second.

Joan Hartsough, a health coach at Suncoast Natural Living, took third place.
