Gabrielle Union is promoting her recent film, a spring/winter romantic comedy that the star says reflects her own life, very similar to her previous role in “The Perfect Find.”
She joined “The Idea of You” as an actress and producer of the film, which centers around a forty-year-old woman, played by Anne Hathaway, who struggles with feeling neglected due to her age.
However, all the pieces changes in her mind when a young, charismatic musician in his twenties, played by Nicholas Galitzine, unexpectedly falls in love with her, questioning social norms and redefining the concepts of age, love and attractiveness.
In interview from Business Insider Union, who’s 51 and married to 42-year-old retired NBA star Dwyane Wade, mentioned that she could discover with the film’s heroine.
“I discover with this story. “I happen to be an older girl and a younger guy,” the “Bring It On” star. he said relating to film.
“To be truly seen is to be truly loved,” she explained. “And whenever you’re finally capable of see yourself, it’s the most effective type of love. “It was part of her (Hathaway’s) journey and it was my journey.”
According to Union, she feels “the hottest” in her life, although she admits to feeling “invisible” in some spaces.
“I didn’t peak at 26,” she explains. “There is so far more to life; there’s so far more intending to see and gain. Much more knowledge to be gained. And I’m not invisible in any respect. I believe the more we speak about it, the more people can feel seen.
“The Perfect Find,” which explores intergenerational relationships and the differing opinions that may arise from those involved, follows Union’s life with her younger spouse.
Her character faces scrutiny from her boss, played by Gina Torres, regarding her relationship with her twenty-something son, played by actor Keith Powers. This tension increases within the film, which is an adaptation of the novel by Tia Williams, when Torres’ character discovers the couple’s intimacy in her apartment, which results in Union’s character being thrown out of the premises.
Union previously revealed that Wade’s mother, Jolina Wade, initially similarly questioned their relationship, providing personal insight into her role within the Netflix production.
“I survived it,” she recalled to Business Insider in 2023. “Being with someone who’s nine years younger than me and dealing with that. Right at the beginning (Wade’s mother) said… “What do you want?” … So you feed off of those things.”
Union stated that at one point she needed to block contact with people and not allow them to influence her love life.
“I got married when I was almost 41 and everyone was like, ‘Oh,’” Union said, adding, “People are beginning to examine what dreams must be. What do you have to want at your age, at your “big age”.
Over the years, fans have taken to social media to comment on why the “Bring It On” star stays the epitome of Black Don’t crack.
“The funny thing about all this talk about age differences is that you forget that Gabrielle got 10 years in D Wade. But social media wasn’t the same back then, so no one cared, lol,” one X user he wrote after dropping the article.

Two years later, one person wrote that they simply didn’t know there was an age difference between the 2 lovebirds.

Union and Wade dated for years before getting married in 2014. She was 41 on the time and he was 31. Most discussions about their age difference have died down, however it does come up infrequently. They have a 5-year-old daughter, Kaavia James, Wade’s two children from previous relationships, and an adopted nephew, Dahveon Morris.
