Owner of Agenda Sports Bar and Grill asks for fairness in front of the Toledo City Council

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – The owner of Agenda Sports Bar and Grill spoke publicly for the first time since a Judge declared the bar a nuisance and ordered the doors shut for a year.

He took his concerns to the Toledo City Council.

And he wasn’t alone; some Black Bar Owners took to the Toledo City Council, standing together to support Agenda Sports Bar.

“I just think that we got to put something in place to make everything fair,” Sean Love, the owner said.

Love said the order to close came as a shock.

“I mean, we did everything we possibly could do, like far as having the police officers, having security, we got camera system and all that put in place prior to this,” he said.

Before the order, two people were killed down the street from the establishment.

Judge Joseph Howe cited a pattern of problems and determined the bar to be a public nuisance.

“It happened on the 6th, went to court on the 11th, had a hearing on the 4th and we closed down on the 13th of this month,” Love said. “And all in 30 days, we’ve been open eight years and we got shut down for a year in 30 days.”

He added, there was no warning.

“We wasn’t given no warning, we weren’t on the cert-list, I mean we didn’t get nothing but just close down for a year,” he said.

Councilmembers, including District 6 Councilwoman Theresa Morris, whose district the bar is in, want more consistency.

“I believe that there has been a different system when it comes to black owned establishments,” Morris said.

At-Large Councilwoman Cerssandra McPherson said, “There needs to be regulation and fairness.”

Last week, the City had no comment regarding the forced closure of Agenda Sports Bar and Grill.

Councilmembers on the public safety committee agreed to meet with the owner of the Agenda Bar, as well as with other Black bar owners, to speak about the issues they’re facing.
