Paramount+ is walking back a spinoff’s season 2 renewal.

“Dexter: Original Sin” has been canceled, Variety reported on Friday, August 22. The crime drama was renewed for season 2 in April, but Variety reports that no production dates were ever scheduled for the new installment. NJ.com has reached out to Paramount+ for comment.

It’s possible that the cancelation is Paramount+’s attempts to focus on another “Dexter” series. Variety reported that there are already plans to open a writer’s room for season 2 of “Dexter: Resurrection,” which premiered in July.

The OG “Dexter” aired on Showtime from 2006 to 2013. The Emmy-winning series starred Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan, a forensic technician/vigilante serial killer whose only victims are other murderers.

The now-canceled “Dexter: Original Sin,” which premiered on Paramount+ in December 2024, is a prequel that takes place in 1991, when the titular antihero is 20 years old. Patrick Gibson starred as Dexter, Molly Brown played his younger sister, Debra, and Christian Slater portrayed Dexter’s adoptive father, Harry Morgan.

In “Dexter: Resurrection,” Hall reprises his role as Morgan for the first time since the 2021 reboot “Dexter: New Blood.” The first revival ended with Dexter’s son Harrison (Jack Alcott) fatally shooting him, but the new series reveals that Dexter survived after all.

During a July interview with the Los Angeles Times, Hall said that he thinks “Dexter: Resurrection” is just getting started.

“All I can say is I don’t think we embark on this season imagining it as a one-off,” he teased. “Without giving away too much, I think the door will be open at the end of this.”

“Dexter: Resurrection” also stars Uma Thurman (Charley), David Zayas (Angel Batista), Kadia Saraf as (Detective Claudette Wallace), Emilia Suárez (Elsa Rivera), and Peter Dinklage (Leon Prater).

Season 1 of “Dexter: Resurrection” is currently airing on Paramount+. New episodes premiere every Friday.
