“I think if you’re a woman, you should play,” Staley says

CLEVELAND (AP) – South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley said Saturday she believes transgender athletes should be allowed to compete in women’s sports.

Staley was asked at a press conference the day before the national championship game during which her undefeated Gamecocks team plays Iowa for the national championship.

“I think if you’re a woman, you should play,” Staley said. “If you consider yourself a woman and want to play sports or vice versa, you should be able to do it.”

The same query was later asked of Iowa State coach Lisa Bluder.

“I understand that this is a topic that interests people, but today I am focused on tomorrow’s match, my players,” Bluder said. “We have an important match tomorrow and that’s what I want to be here to talk about. But I know that’s an important issue for another time.”

The topic has change into a hot topic amongst conservative groups and others who imagine transgender athletes should not be allowed to compete on girls’ and women’s sports teams. More than a dozen current and former college athletes participated last month filed a federal lawsuit against the NCAA, accusing the governing body of school sports of violating their rights by allowing transgender women to compete in women’s sports.

At least 20 states have approved some version of a blanket ban on transgender athletes playing on K-12 and collegiate sports teams across the state, however the Biden administration’s proposal to ban such blanket bans is anticipated to be finalized this 12 months after multiple delays and far opposition. Under the proposal, the rule would state that blanket bans would violate Title IX, the landmark gender equality laws passed in 1972.

In 2022, the NCAA modified its policy regarding the participation of transgender athletes in a so-called attempt to align with the game’s national governing bodies. The third phase of the revised policy adds the standards of national and international sports governing bodies to NCAA rules and is scheduled to be implemented on August 1.

Staley, a distinguished voice on women’s sports and a two-time AP Coach of the Year, said she understood the political nature of the query and the response her answer might provoke.

“So now the barnstormers are going to fill up my timeline and distract me on one of the most important days of our game,” she said. “And it doesn’t trouble me. I actually am.”
