Sydney Sweeney is at it again, with a new advertising campaign in which she uses her beauty to break the internet. This time, she’s pitching shoes, which might seem boring, except she still found a way to work in scenes that simultaneously delight and outrage the internet.
The delight comes from men, obviously, but also women who like to look attractive. Sydney Sweeney always does well with those demos. It’s especially important that women who care about their appearance approve, since they’re the only ones who buy the clothes she’s selling.
Some of the outrage seems to be coming from people who are still hung up on her jeans commercial and have convinced themselves Sydney Sweeney’s a Nazi for… reasons? The rest of it seems to be coming from people who don’t know what actors do. In the Jimmy Choo spot, Sweeney is shown reading lines and preparing to play a ballerina. This has allegedly angered some corners of the internet because Sydney Sweeney is not actually a ballerina.
The logic here is rather dizzying. Has any ballerina in any movie ever been played by an actual ballerina? For instance, Natalie Portman played one in Black Swan, and no one seemed to have a problem with that.
This ballerina complaint is, obviously, a very thin excuse for more backlash against the return of traditionally attractive women being used in advertising campaigns. The opposition to this is becoming increasingly silly, which means it’s probably about to go away and we’ll soon return to the days of babes selling beer in bikinis. I don’t know if that was a better world, but the streets were cleaner back then, and the billboards were nicer too.
