In northeastern Imphal, drone footage showed the Iril River flooding nearby villages to devastating effect after it breached its banks on Monday morning.
In the financial capital of Mumbai, a monorail broke down with at least 17 people stranded for hours inside it, according to authorities.
Monsoons are the lifeblood of India’s nearly $4 trillion economy, delivering almost 70% of the rainfall needed to water farms and replenishing aquifers and reservoirs. However, excessive rain often causes frequent floods.
