LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – United Independent School District is considering adding some new sports to its roster.
During this year’s UIL legislative council meeting, members denied adding boys’ volleyball, bowling, and table tennis as potential sports for schools to offer.
However, in a recent meeting, UISD board members discussed potentially adding other UIL-approved sports such as girls’ and boys’ wrestling, water polo, and middle school swimming and diving.
Bobby Cruz, director of UISD athletics, said that the school district would like to add more sports, but it all depends on interest, funding, and logistics.
“If we’re going to do anything, we’re going to add approved sports first at UISD,” Cruz said. “Wrestling is gaining some popularity. I had a gentleman from Indiana call and ask me if we offer wrestling. And we’re getting more of those.”
Some of the challenges schools face when trying to add more sports is popularity.
Board members also discussed that having too many different sports may force kids to choose between two sports they want to participate in.
