Trump’s India Tariffs Deadline Today LIVE Updates: The deadline for the additional 25% tariffs to be imposed on Indian goods by the United States will end tonight and from August 27, Indian imports in America will be levied with a 50% tariff rate. President Donald Trump-led administration has termed India’s continued purchase of Russian oil a “national security concern” and Vice President JD Vance recently told NBC News that President Trump had applied “aggressive economic leverage”, including “secondary tariffs on India” to “make it harder for the Russians to get rich from their oil economy”.

US Notice to India: The US Department of Homeland Security on Tuesday notified India about the plans to increase tariffs to 50% on Indian goods, signalling that the White House plans to push ahead with the higher tariffs after talks to broker a ceasefire deal between Russia and Ukraine appeared to be stalled. The notice said Indian goods that entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, on or after 12:01 AM eastern daylight time on August 27, 2025 would attract heightened levies.

PM Modi’s message to US: PM Narendra Modi, in a statement to support small entrepreneurs and farmers on Monday said, “No matter how much pressure comes, we will keep increasing our strength to withstand it.” His comments came two days before the Trump administration’s tariff penalty on India over its purchase of Russian oil kicks in.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday targeted US President Donald Trump over the decision of imposing 50% tariff on Indian goods import and reiterated that the US tariff was “unjustified and unreasonable, adding that the issue was wrongly being presented as an “oil dispute”.

However, Jaishankar stated that talks were still ongoing in order to have a trade deal between India and US despite the tensions. “We are two big countries, we need to have conversations… and the lines are not cut, people are talking to each other, and we will see where that goes,” Jaishankar said.

Speaking at a forum, Jaishankar said “We have not had a US President who has conducted foreign policy as publicly as the current one. That itself is a departure that’s not limited to India.”

During a gathering in Ahmedabad, PM Modi said “My government will never let harm come the way of small entrepreneurs, farmers, livestock rearers.” The prime minister added, “For Modi, interests of farmers, cattle rearers and small-scale industries are paramount. The pressure on us may increase, but we will bear it all.”

The US Department of Homeland Security has issued a notice outlining plans to implement 50% tariff on products from India, signalling that the White House plans to go ahead with heightened levies after India continued its purchase of Russian oil.

The homeland department’s notice said Indian goods “that are entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, on or after 12:01 AM eastern daylight time on August 27, 2025.”

US President Donald Trump, earlier this month, had said that India would be levied with an additional 25% tariff penalty other than the normal 25% tariff rate over its purchase of Russian oil and had set an August 27 deadline for implementation.
