As freshmen and returning students descend on the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga campus, many are looking for a place to belong.

Classes begin Monday, and many campus ministries have activities (most involving free food) planned during the first week of school. Whether you are an incoming freshman or returning student looking for a community to plug into that shares your world view, a parent or grandparent looking for somewhere comforting to send your student or just exploring the realm of faith, Chattanooga has a religious group for just about everyone.

BAPTIST COLLEGIATE MINISTRIES

The Well is the Baptist Collegiate Ministry’s weekly worship service, at 7 p.m. Tuesdays at 540 Vine St. The organization also has small group Bible studies that meet weekly and retreats. Visit the website for a list of events involving free food leading up to the first day of classes.

CATHOLIC STUDENT CENTER

The Catholic Student Center at 514 Palmetto St. hosts Mass on Sundays and at 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays, with a free dinner following.

CHRISTIAN STUDENT CENTER

The Christian Student Center hosts worship or devotionals each night Monday through Thursday. Mondays and Wednesdays bring $2 home-cooked lunches at the 609 Houston St. facility. The house backs up to Central Church of Christ, the congregation primarily associated with the ministry. Sunday morning worship is hosted at Central Church of Christ.

CHI ALPHA

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga branch of Chi Alpha, a ministry associated with the Assemblies of God, is at 615 McCallie Ave. The organization holds weekly worship at 7 p.m. Tuesdays, according to its website.

CRU

CRU, an inter-denominational Christian ministry, meets for worship at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Benwood Auditorium. The organization also has a small group program that meets for Bible study on different days and times during the week.

FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN ATHLETES

UTC has a Fellowship of Christian Athletes huddle that will launch weekly meetings Aug. 25, according to Laura O’Dell, the ministry’s collegiate director. Weekly meetings are every Monday night in Derthick Lecture Hall, Room 101. Free food is available starting at 7 p.m., and the huddle meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. Information for events can be found on the organization’s Instagram account.

THE HOPE HOUSE

The Hope House is an inclusive campus ministry sponsored by Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and Cumberland Presbyterian churches, and is UTC’s branch of UKirk, a nationwide ministry sponsored and staffed by the denominations. The house, 808 Vine St., hosts a free lunch starting at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and free breakfast on Thursday mornings. The house is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

THE HOUSE

The House is a ministry supported by churches across Chattanooga belonging to several different Christian denominations. Weekly worship services are held at 8 p.m. Tuesdays at 650 McCallie Ave.

INTERVARSITY CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP

The first three Wednesdays of each month, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship meets for worship in Derthick Lecture Hall, Room 101, according to the ministry’s website. At 6:30 p.m. every other Friday night, a women’s group can be found in the Chickamauga Room and a men’s group in the Guerry Center.

ISLAMIC SOCIETY OF GREATER CHATTANOOGA

There are no specific Muslim collegiate organizations, but if students are looking to get involved, the Islamic Society of Greater Chattanooga is welcoming. The center offers a place for prayers, community events, sports, Sunday school and more. Weekly sermons are at 2 p.m. every Friday. The facility is at 2533 Gunbarrel Road.

JEWISH STUDENT UNION

The Jewish Student Union is inactive on campus, but there are four Jewish organizations in Chattanooga to get involved with. Mizpah Congregation is the Reform Jewish Congregation in Chattanooga, 923 McCallie Ave. B’nai Zion Congregation at 6210 Airpark Drive is the Conservative Jewish synagogue. Chabad of Chattanooga is the Orthodox Jewish organization in town and holds Orthodox services, 950 Vine St. The Jewish Federation of Greater Chattanooga is not a religious organization but a cultural center that is dedicated to building a stronger Jewish community, 5461 North Terrace Road.

PROJECT CANTERBURY

Project Canterbury is the campus ministry sponsored by the Episcopal Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Worship services are held at 6 p.m. Sundays at Christ Church, with a free meal afterward. Bible study is held at 3 p.m. Thursdays in the memorial garden at the church.

REFORMED UNIVERSITY FELLOWSHIP

Reformed University Fellowship is associated with the Presbyterian Church in America and holds weekly meetings at 8 p.m. Tuesdays at the First Presbyterian Student Center, 535 McCallie Ave.

SANATAN MANDIR OF CHATTANOOGA

Students looking to get involved with the Hindu community in Chattanooga can find information on the Sanatan Mandir website regarding services and events. The temple is at 1518 Hickory Valley Road, and the priests can be reached at (423)-499-2799.

THE WESLEY CENTER

The Wesley Center, 607 Douglas St., is the campus ministry of the United Methodist Church. The ministry hosts free lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays. Bible study is at 6 p.m. Wednesdays. The center offers free soup at noon Thursdays and free dinner and worship starting at 6 p.m. Thursdays.

YOUNG LIFE

Information about YoungLife College at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga can be found on the organization’s Instagram profile. Weekly meetings are at 8 p.m. Wednesdays, 757 E. M.L. King Blvd.
