Recreational sports leagues foster fun and community in Richmond
Reported by Chris Suarez for VPM News
When Rae Kelly started playing in a casual baseball league eight years ago, she didn’t know it would lead to her first overseas trip.
Almost every Sunday throughout the year, about 15 to 20 or so people gather to play with RVA Sandlot, an inclusive co-ed baseball group founded in 2012. That’s where Kelly met her best friend, Chiara, a German immigrant who wanted to try out America’s favorite pastime.
“She was an au pair here, and she also is heavily into soccer. And I work as an on-call nanny, and I’m also a big soccer fan. We immediately hit it off,” Rae said. “We went to a Richmond Kickers game the week after, and we’ve been best friends ever since.”
A growing number of people in Richmond and across the country are using recreational sports to build new connections — which it can be difficult to do as an adult, especially in a new city. Earlier this year, about 1 in 4 surveyed adults told CivicScience they are at least ‘somewhat’ likely to join an intramural league this summer.
