The trailer for Hulu’s long-awaited documentary is finally here. Adapted from Jason Parham’s WIRED article “A folk history of black Twitter”, this series explores the developments, movements, voices, and memes which have made Black Twitter an influential and dominant force on the Internet.
The three-part documentary, directed by Prentice Penny in his non-fiction directorial debut, pays tribute to the influence of Black Twitter and features voices from the influential online community reminiscent of humorist W. Kamau Bell, media personality Kid Fury and journalists Jemele Hill, Wesley Lowery and April Reign, authors Roxane Gay and Luvvie Ajayi, transgender activist Raquel Willis, and many others.
“When I was looking for my next project, I was excited because I knew it would be a challenge and that I would feel creative fear again,” says Penny. “If we don’t document our history, who will? Making this documentary with Onyx Collective showed me that power was never in the platform; it has always been within us. As expected, Black Twitter has a lot of thoughts and I can’t wait to see who will be in attendance on May 9!”
