It’s amazing to reflect on key moments in Black culture over the past 30 years. From the discharge of TLC’s “CrazySexyCool” album to the historic election of Nelson Mandela and our inaugural Essence Festival in 1994, here at Essence we rejoice Black excellence.

From the pages of our magazine to the stages of our festivals, we have highlighted the achievements of black ladies and men world wide. It’s a beautiful reminder of the lasting impact of black culture – it transcends time, leaving a legacy for future generations to embrace and rejoice. When we glance back, we’re full of nostalgia for the style trends and iconic music that defined this era. From bamboo earrings to vivid neon outfits, black culture has left an unforgettable mark on the world, shaping the atmosphere for generations.

Now, in 2024, now we have the possibility to relive these memories in film! A series of series and movies that commemorate the brilliance and fantastic thing about black culture, and are a love letter to the impact it has had on our lives.

Above the Rim
The story of a highschool basketball star stuck between street life and a promising future. The film starring Duane Martin and Tupac Shakur was also an ode to hip-hop with a soundtrack consisting of legends similar to Tupac himself, Dr. Dre and Al B Sure.

The original gangsters
