Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s love story began in early 2005, with a chance meeting Urban describes as akin to “meeting a real life princess.” Decades later, they still seemed as smitten as newlyweds, frequently embracing on red carpets and never failing to celebrate one another. While presenting Kidman with a lifetime achievement award in 2024, Urban delivered a speech just as tear-jerking as the best wedding vows: “She has a capacity to love like nobody I’ve ever met…Next year will be 20 years that I’ve been madly in love with you.”

Throughout their 19 years of marriage, Kidman and Urban frequently cited one another as central sources of support through life’s developments, from the birth of their two daughters to their many career milestones. News that Kidman had filed for divorce on September 30, 2025 left fans in disbelief—especially after a source told People one day earlier that “[Kidman] has been fighting to save the marriage.”

They first met in January 2005.

Kidman and Urban first met at a 2005 gala for G’Day USA, an organization that fosters diplomacy between Australia and the United States. In a 2024 tribute to her, Urban described their meeting: “I felt like I was meeting a real-life princess.” He also admitted he carried her phone number around in his pocket for a week while he built up the courage to call her.

In a 2019 interview with People, Kidman said that she realized Urban was the one on her 38th birthday, when he appeared at her apartment at 5 a.m. with flowers. “That is when I went, ‘This is the man I hope I get to marry.’”

They announced their engagement in May 2006 and married one month later.

Kidman confirmed their engagement in a red carpet interview with People on May 13, 2006, at a UNIFEM gala. Explaining her choice of date, she said, “He’s actually my fiancé…I wouldn’t be bringing my boyfriend.”

In June 2006, Kidman and Urban wed in a church in Manly, Australia. Kidman drove to the ceremony in a vintage Rolls Royce with her dad through crowds of people hoping to catch a glimpse of her, crying the entire way, People reports. They celebrated with a candlelit reception.

They share two daughters.

In early 2008, a representative for Kidman announced her and Urban were expecting their first child together. The couple welcomed their first daughter together, Sunday Rose, in the summer of 2008. In a statement, they shared that she weighed 6 pounds, 7.5 ounces. On his website, Urban wrote “We want to thank everybody that has kept us in their thoughts and prayers. We feel very blessed and grateful that we can share this joy with all of you today.”

In December 2010, Kidman and Urban welcomed a second daughter, Faith Margaret, via surrogate. People later reported that the name was inspired by their enduring faith throughout their fertility struggles.

In January 2024, both girls joined their parents at the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award Gala Tribute Celebrating Nicole Kidman, where Urban presented Kidman with a lifetime achievement award. That same year, Sunday made her runway debut, walking at Miu Miu’s October Paris Fashion Week show.

They’ve performed together.

In early 2010, back at the gala where they met five years prior, Kidman and Urban performed a musical duet. They sang a reimagined version of the song Down Under with lyrics celebrating fellow Aussie and honoree Simon Baker.

They’re philanthropists.

In early 2020, as wildfires devastated southeast Australia, Kidman and Urban pledged $500,000 towards relief efforts and shared organizations accepting donations to Instagram.

In the fall of 2024, Urban and Kidman traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina to celebrate the singer’s 57th birthday, where he joined a slew of other artists raising money for Hurricane Helene relief efforts. The Concert for Carolina show featured headliners Luke Combs and Eric Church and raised $24.5 million.

“[We’re] here with all of you tonight because of Eric giving Keith a call,” Kidman said while on stage with Urban. “I do want to say it’s his birthday tonight … And he wanted to be here with you. So here we go. Eric Church called him and here we are.”

Urban presented Kidman with a lifetime achievement award in 2024 (and brought her to tears with his speech).

In April of 2024, Kidman was honored with a lifetime achievement award at the American Film Institute gala. Many of her friends and colleagues spoke to her career, but it was Urban who brought her to tears with his touching speech. “Everyone speaking here tonight is going to talk about Nic’s talent, and I easily could do that. But I do want to take the opportunity to talk about Nic’s heart and her spirit,” Urban said.

He reflected on their meeting and early marriage, expressing gratitude for the way she saw him through his journey toward sobriety. “If you want to see what love in action really looks like, give that a whirl… She chose love, and here we are tonight, 18 years later,” Urban said. “That’s the thing about Nic, she loves and she loves life. I’ve actually never met anyone who has such a passion for being alive… Nic’s not jaded, she’s not cynical, she’s definitely not complacent… She has a capacity to love like nobody I’ve ever met… Congratulations, baby girl, I love you,” he added.

Kidman returned the favor in her acceptance speech. “There’s an enormous amount of luck in my live, but also, the most important thing: love. Big, big love. Right there is the love of my life, and the loves of my life,” she said, gesturing to Urban and their two daughters.

They attended the Academy of Country Music Awards together in May 2025.

When Urban received the honor of the ACM Triple Crown Award in May 2025, his wife was by his side. Kidman had recently debuted a mullet at the 2025 Met Gala, but was back to her usual long strawberry-blonde locks for the Academy of Country Music Awards.

In his acceptance speech, Urban said, “I want to thank the ACM Academy for this. And my wife, Nicole Mary [Kidman], is here tonight. I love you, baby girl. And our girls, Sunday and Faith, watching at home tonight—I love you both too.” 

They celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary in June 2025.

The Practical Magic actress shared a black-and-white photo to Instagram of herself cozying up with her longtime husband for their 19th wedding anniversary. “Happy Anniversary Baby ❤️ @KeithUrban,” she captioned the post.

Kidman filed for divorce on September 30, 2025.

One day after reports confirmed that the couple had separated, People confirmed Kidman filed for divorce on September 30. A source previously told the outlet “[Urban and Kidman’s] lives were moving in different directions, and once he quietly set up his own place, it felt like the writing was on the wall,” adding that it “hasn’t been a secret in their circles that Keith and Nicole have been living separately for a while now.”

“People close to Keith felt like the split was kind of inevitable,” they concluded.

Another source shared with People, “Nicole’s sister [Antonia] has been a rock, and the entire Kidman family has come together to support one another” amid news of her and Urban’s split.
