Freestyle Digital Media acquires documentary ‘Class of Her Own’. news

Freestyle Digital Media has acquired the acclaimed documentary from award-winning director Boaz Dvir.

“A Classroom of Your Own” — the acclaimed 2013 feature-length documentary retitled from “Discovering Glory” — tells the story of “a teacher’s transformation into an innovator who infused hip-hop, dance and phone calls into her math and reading classes,” it says. within the official press release. “During her first 25 years at Duval Elementary in East Gainesville, Florida, Gloria Jean Merriex followed her district’s guidelines. But after her school failed a high-stakes state exam, she modified. Entirely.”

Facing dire consequences, including a budget freeze and the threat of closure, Merriex fought back, creating her own curriculum from scratch to support her students and experimenting with music and movement.

“She wrote songs and choreographed geometric movements,” reads the synopsis. “She turned the textbook around and began the varsity 12 months with probably the most difficult concepts. She practiced tough love. She has significantly raised her expectations of students and herself. Within a 12 months, she catapulted the usual Duval test rating from an F to an A.

In an announcement, Dvir shared the next details about Merriex: “Gloria has created an action plan that we should follow to help vulnerable students make up for what has been lost during the pandemic. Her main message to other teachers is that they can meet students where they are and do so in an authentic way. It’s not necessarily about rapping or singing; it’s about finding out-of-the-box ways to make learning relevant, fun and purposeful for everyone.”

The producers of the documentary are Dvir, Emil Pinnock and Matthew Einstein. The narrator of the project is Tamara Tunie, whose credits include the long-running series “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.”
