In case you missed it, on Sunday, Kieran Culkin and his wife, Jazz Charton, revealed that they are expecting their third baby, with Jazz’s bump proudly on display when they stepped out for the opening night of Waiting for Godot in New York.
The news comes almost seven months after Kieran was heavily criticized for his speech about wanting more children with Jazz at this year’s Oscars, with Kieran previously echoing a similar sentiment at the Emmys.
In case you missed it, when the Succession star picked up the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series Emmy in January 2024, he said: “My beautiful wife, Jazz — thank you for sharing your life with me and giving me two amazing kids, Kinsey Sioux and Wilder Wolf. I love you so many and so much. And Jazz, I want more — You said maybe, if I win!”

And Kieran referenced this speech when he picked up the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance in A Real Pain in March of this year, with the actor telling the world as he accepted the accolade: “About a year ago I was on a stage like this and I very stupidly, publicly said that I wanted a third kid from her because she said if I won the award she would give me the kid.”
“It turns out she said that because she didn’t think I was going to win, but people came up to her and were really annoying her, I think it got to her,” he went on. “Anyway, after the show we were walking to the parking lot and she goes: ‘Oh God, I did say that. I guess I owe you a third kid.’ And I turned to her and said: ‘I want four.’”
“She turned to me and I swear to God, she said to me: ‘I will give you four when you win an Oscar,’” Kieran revealed. “I held my hand out and she shook it, and I have not brought it up once until now. Remember that, honey? You do. Well, I just have this to say to you, Jazz, love of my life, ye of little faith. No pressure, I love you.”
“I’m really sorry I did this again, and let’s get cracking on those kids, what do you say?” he concluded at the time.
During the speech, Jazz was shown bursting into laughter and nodding to confirm Kieran’s version of events, leaving very little doubt that she was in on the gag. She even joked about it when she posted about her husband’s win on Instagram a few days later, writing: “AN OSCAR?!!!! Okay okay hear me out – making empty baby pacts may seem foolish but it’s clearly been a great motivator. Would he have come this far if I hadn’t kept promising him more kids if he won awards?….. Probably. But who’s to say?…”
But despite Jazz’s lighthearted response, some corners of the internet still took it upon themselves to be offended on her behalf, with Kieran facing fierce backlash for his speech from social media users.
One viral tweet, which has been seen more than six million times, drew attention to the way that Jazz playfully mouthed “No” in response to Kieran’s request in the speech, with the X user adding: “For all the people saying ‘it’s clearly a joke, she’s laughing,’ please note: 1) Women often laugh at jokes that target them. It’s fawning behavior, meant to say ‘please don’t do worse to me.’ 2) she says no! 3) He could have said anything up there about what a great wife and mother she is, how she supported his career and made it possible, but in his moment of glory he instead chose to say she didn’t believe in him and that her responsibility to him is reproduction.”
“This is his biggest moment in his career and he uses it to put her down and put her in her place,” the tweet went on. “Additionally, demanding children in front of an international audience with all those witnesses is like a public proposal: It is designed to pressure the woman into saying yes, stomping on her choice.”
This basically sums up the gist of the discourse, which genuinely dominated both X and TikTok in the days after Kieran’s win.
And now, Jazz has revealed that she was, in fact, already two months pregnant at the Oscars, which instantly debunks all of the negative responses to Kieran’s speech at the time.
Taking to her Instagram page after debuting her bump on Sunday, Jazz wrote: “Saw Keanu Reeves on broadway and now I’m 9 months pregnant ♥️this is very on brand for me. I made a deal with this baby to let me make it to this before labor, not sure what it wants in return but I’m CLEARLY a woman of my word.”

And when somebody commented: “Waiting for people to realise you were already pregnant when he gave that Oscars speech lmao,” Jazz jokingly replied: “I was 2 months and so sick – he’s an asshole.”
So, in summary, while social media users were psychoanalyzing Kieran’s speech and projecting seriously sinister undertones onto it — like accusing him of publicly pressuring Jazz into getting pregnant against her will — the couple already knew that baby number three was well on its way, making this situation a perfect example of just how damaging parasocial relationships can be.
In fact, it’s a stark reminder of the fact that we actually have no idea what’s going on in celebrities’ lives, so people should probably think twice before publicly vilifying somebody over something as inane as an in-joke in an acceptance speech — after all, Kieran likely knows his wife’s sense of humor and boundaries better than strangers on the internet do.

And this sentiment has not been lost on people, with one person tweeting off the back of Jazz’s comment: “Jazz was already pregnant when Kieran gave his Oscar speech, and knew it……………I need a handwritten apology from everyone who was talking about him like he was a villian in the handmaids tale.”
“people were calling him all kinds of abusive and misogynistic. pie slammed in your face,” somebody else wrote.
While another summarized: “so she was already pregnant, he made a joke and it was a banter which is fine in the family, but people online started a shit show because of course they know their boundaries better then themselves.”
The sad thing is, I’m sure we’ll all learn absolutely nothing from this — but as always, let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
