India’s Lovepreet Singh finished in eighth position in the men’s 110kg+ category on the final day of the World Weightlifting Championships 2025 in Forde, Norway, on Saturday.
Part of Group B in his weight class at the ongoing World Weightlifting Championships, Lovpreet Singh managed a total lift of 369kg (168kg snatch + 201kg clean and jerk).
Lovepreet Singh, a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, had two unsuccessful snatch attempts at 168kg before finally clearing the weight on his third and final attempt.
In the clean and jerk section, the Indian weightlifter failed with his first attempt at 201kg before succeeding with his second visit to the platform. His final clean and jerk attempt at 209kg was unsuccessful.
Paris 2024 Olympics silver medallist Varazdat Lalayan of Armenia won the gold medal after lifting a total of 461kg (211kg snatch + 250kg clean and jerk).
Two-time Olympic medallist Gor Minasyan of Bahrain secured silver with a total lift of 447kg (205kg snatch + 242kg clean and jerk), while Yeonghwan Song of the Republic of Korea took bronze with 410kg (175kg snatch + 235kg clean and jerk).
India’s only medal at the 2025 World Weightlifting Championships was won by Mirabai Chanu, who clinched a silver in the women’s 48kg category on the opening day of the competition.
It was her third medal after the World Weightlifting Championships after a gold at Anaheim in 2017 and a silver at Bogotá in 2022.
With Chanu’s silver, India’s tally at the World Weightlifting Championships rose to 18 – three golds, 10 silvers and five bronze. Interestingly, all of these have been won by women.
