ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (KWQC) – A Quad-Cities public radio station is getting a community grant months after they found out they lost a big source of funding.

Quad Cities Community Foundation awarded $629,000 to 36 local nonprofits.

The $15,000 WVIK will receive comes at a crucial time after federal funding cuts, said Jared Johnson, the general manager of the Rock Island station.

“So that kind of support, for what we do in the community, and how important it is [and] encouraging in what could otherwise be a very difficult time,” Johnson said.

The House passed a bill July 17 to cut more than $1 billion to the Corporation of Public Broadcasting, which in turn subsidizes about 1,500 locally owned PBS and NPR stations across the country.

Johnson said the money lost was 13% of their planned annual budget.

“I know that there were a couple other [local public radio] media organizations that were also awarded grants,” said Johnson.

Also receiving $15,000 each:

  • WQPT Public Television – Western Illinois University Foundation
  • WGVV Quad Cities Community Radio

The foundation announced its operations and program grants Monday, calling it the largest competitive grantmaking cycle of the year. The money is designed to provide nonprofits with stable operational funding and program support so they can expand services sustainably.

This year’s recipients represent nearly every corner of community life, from housing and healthcare to childcare, the arts, and public broadcasting, the community foundation said.

Grants ranged from $5,000 to $40,000 and were made possible by donations to the Community Impact Fund and other endowments.
