The ongoing U.S. government shutdown will not impact the playing of college sports games at Air Force, Army and Navy, the three service academies confirmed to The Athletic on Wednesday.
Navy and Air Force play each other in football this Saturday.
The Army and Navy have long operated their athletic departments as nonprofit entities separate from the government and were similarly not impacted during the 2018 shutdowns. An Army spokesperson stated that some government civilian workers involved in game-day logistics are affected, but larger aspects, such as travel and game competition, remain unaffected.
Air Force, which more recently moved its athletic department fundraising into a similar non-government entity, briefly canceled some athletics competitions in January 2018 during that shutdown. That will not be the case this time.
“All Air Force Academy home and away intercollegiate athletic events will be held as scheduled during the government shutdown,” an athletics spokesperson for the academy said in a statement. “Funding for these events, along with travel/logistical support will be provided by the Air Force Academy Athletic Corporation (AFAAC). Updates to the GoAirForceFalcons.com website will be significantly reduced and delayed. There will be no video streaming of home athletic events.”
Air Force nearly canceled a football trip to Navy during a 2013 government shutdown before funds from the United Services Automobile Association helped the game proceed.
This time, all three service academies will continue playing games as scheduled.
