The WNBA won’t announce the All-Defensive team as planned. The league reportedly rescheduled the award announcement, according to Annie Costabile of FOS.

The decision comes in the midst of escalating tension between the league and its players. While the lingering collective-bargaining agreement deadline has been a source of stress for the players all season, the situation jumped to a new level Tuesday when Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier delivered a four-and-a-half minute statement criticizing both the league and commissioner Cathy Engelbert.

Collier’s comments got support from various members of the Indiana Fever on Thursday. Sophie Cunningham was the most vocal about the situation, calling for accountability in the league’s front office. Cunningham flat out said she “was not a fan” of WNBA leadership and criticized Engelbert for making the situation about her. Caitlin Clark also made comments in support of Collier.

Moving the award announcement may have nothing to do with the ongoing strife between the league and its players. In the league’s original release announcing its award schedule, it noted the dates of those announcements were subject to change, per Costabile.

On that release, the WNBA initially listed Oct. 1 as the date it would announce the All-Defensive team, so the league was already off its original schedule before Thursday’s reported delay.

The league has not publicly acknowledged whether the All-Defensive team announcement was rescheduled. Given some of the comments made about WNBA leadership and Engelbert on Thursday, it’s possible the league is planning some type of response, and doesn’t want to put that out alongside an award announcement.
