DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The government shutdown is impacting many federal departments.
One of them, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, also known as HUD, administers programs to promote affordable housing, community development, and fair housing opportunities across the country.
At Mid-Florida Housing Partnership Inc., the shutdown is delaying projects they’re working on.
“We’re just on Day 2 of the new fiscal year. It’s difficult because now with the shutdown, the notice of funding availability has been delayed until we get past this, so that delays services for a lot of folks,” Mid-Florida Housing Partnership Inc. Executive Director Lydia Gregg said.
Those services include working with people on their budget and credit, preparing people for home ownership, credit and credit score, and one-on-one counseling — all of which are funded through the HUD counseling grant.
“People are just barely making it, and to not be able — to not take advantage of comprehensive counseling services is going to hurt our community,” Gregg said.
Charles Woodyard, CEO of Housing Daytona Beach, says hiis organization’s real estate activities have been put on pause because of the shutdown.
“We have three mixed-income properties right here — Pine Haven, The Villages at Halifax, and Lakeside community — which are in need of substantial rehab right now,” Woodyard said. “We’re going to be converting those properties to a mixture of tax credit units which is a low-income housing tax credit program that the federal government administers.”
The collaborative approach to see these projects through, Woodyard says, just isn’t happening right now.
“So we go back and forth with HUD central in Washington D.C., and also the field office in Jacksonville, Fla. They’re shutdown right now,” Woodyard said.
Woodyard said that if the shutdown is prolonged, the ripple effects could be damaging.
“If this shutdown goes on past a couple of months, I think we’re going to have a serious problem being able to house our families without going into debt,” Woodyard said.
