Something tells us that people will remember the next episode of Songs & Stories With Kelly Clarkson for a long, long time.

Alex Duda, executive producer and showrunner of The Kelly Clarkson Show, confirms to Entertainment Weekly that the next guest to accompany Clarkson on her music series will be three-time Grammy winner Sarah McLachlan

“We have Sarah McLachlan. We already taped our first one,” Duda says. Teasing the pair’s upcoming performance, she adds, “It’s beautiful. Their voices together are like butter.”

Blending dazzling live performances with powerful storytelling, Songs & Stories With Kelly Clarkson sees the “Stronger” singer team up with another artist to discuss the inspiration behind some of their biggest hits. Past guests include Gloria Estefan, the Jonas Brothers, Lizzo, and Teddy Swims.

Duda notes that Clarkson and McLachlan will perform a range of singles and B-sides on their episode.

“She sings some of this hits and some ones that [Clarkson] loves,” the showrunner says. “Kelly loves the song ‘I Love You’ and she asks to do that. ‘Angel.’ All the big hits. But it’s also about what is the story behind each of the songs, which I find really interesting.”

Jason Halbert, Clarkson’s longtime collaborator and music director, adds that the series has quickly become a big hit with her band, Y’all.  “I think that’s our new favorite thing that we get to do because, you know, we’re selfish — we’re musicians,” he teases. “And so to be able to have a whole episode dedicated to music has been so much fun for us.”

According to Halbert, it’s the invited artists who get the ball rolling on what songs they’ll be performing with Clarkson on the show. “Of course we want some hits and then whatever they’re excited about doing,” he says. “The artist always submits us a list and then Kelly weighs in. Sarah McLachlan’s a great example — she has so many hits to choose from.”

He similarly recalls Clarkson requesting that they include “I Love You” — McLachlan’s 1997 emotional single about missing the chance to properly convey one’s feelings to someone — on the show’s docket.

“So it’s a collaborative thing,” he notes, “but it’s 90 percent the artist that’s coming in and Kelly weighing in on something she wants to do.”

Watch Clarkson and McLachlan team up when Songs & Stories With Kelly Clarkson airs tonight on NBC at 10 p.m. ET/PT and is available to stream the next day on Peacock.
