Chance the Rapper and his wife Kirsten Corley have revealed that they’re going their separate ways. The announcement comes almost a year after the “Sunday Candy” artist was filmed rubbing shoulders with other women while on vacation in Jamaica.
Both Corley and the recording artist — whose real name is Chancelor Bennett — released a statement on April 3 announcing that they were searching for a divorce “after a period of separation.”
“After a period of separation, we both decided to separate.
We made this decision amicably and with gratitude for the time we spent together,” reads a statement posted on each of their Instagram accounts. “God has blessed us with two beautiful daughters that we will continue to raise together. We kindly ask for privacy and respect during this transition period. Thank you Chance and Kirsten.”
Bennett and Corely were together for several years before getting married in 2019. The first couple has two daughters – 4-year-old Marli and 7-year-old Kensli.
It is unclear whether the 2 have filed for divorce yet. However, many usually are not surprised by the separation.
The “Summer Friends” rapper was heavily criticized for celebrating his thirtieth birthday last year at Carnival in Jamaica, where he was caught on video crushing a woman who was not his wife. After the news of his separation, the identical videos began appearing on the Internet.
Bennett’s actions and behavior sparked controversy online about what is suitable and acceptable in a marriage and whether Corley agrees with his actions.
Weeks after sharing the viral videos, Corley shared a cryptic post on Instagram that many believed was about her wayward husband. The post included words from the late poet Maya Angelou, who highlighted a passage about people not growing up.
“Most people don’t grow up. It’s too damn hard. What happens is that most people get older. This is the truth,” the post reads. “They honor their credit cards, they find parking spaces, they get married, they have the nerve to have children, but they don’t grow up.”
Corley concluded, “I hope that one day we all decide to grow up.”
Fans reacted to X’s news with one word replying“He shouldn’t have gone on that trip to Jamacia.” Another fan he was joking“Not every opportunity you take will work out.” Third fan he replied, “This is unlucky news! It’s all the time sad to listen to concerning the end of a marriage, especially after five years.
Chance the Rapper is currently a judge on “The Voice” and Corley is the founder of World of Boby, a lifestyle kid’s clothing brand.
