Watch: Nicole Kidman Addresses New “Direction” Amid Keith Urban Breakup
Nicole Kidman has come to this place with wisdom.
Less than two weeks after filing for divorce from Keith Urban following 19 years of marriage, the AMC Theaters brand ambassador, 58, detailed why her favorite aspect of growing older has been learning how to handle whatever life throws at her.
“The best part is the experiences that you’ve accumulated,” Nicole told Harper’s Bazaar in an interview published Oct. 9. “You go, ‘Oh, I’ve been here before. I actually know how to handle this now.’ Or, ‘Maybe I haven’t been in this place, but I’ve experienced something similar to this, and I do know that I will get through it.’”
The Practical Magic actress added, “There’s something to knowing that no matter how painful, or how difficult, or how devastating something is, there is a way through.”
And while Nicole feels equipped to persevere through anything, she is aware that pain is part of the growing process.
“You’re going to have to feel it,” she continued. “You’re not going to be able to numb it. You are going to have to feel it, and it’s going to feel insurmountable at times. You’re going to feel like you’re broken, but if you move gently and slowly—and it can take an enormous amount of time—it does pass.”
But while life’s difficult moments have made Nicole stronger, she is driven by being a mom to her daughters Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14, with Keith, as well as kids Bella, 32, and Connor, 30, with ex-husband Tom Cruise.

“My children [give me the] purpose of being their protector and their guide,” the Big Little Lies star explained, “promising them that I’m here and that, no matter what, there’s always a safe place to grow up in.”
Nicole filed for divorce from Keith on Sept. 30, one day after news broke that the pair had been living apart since the beginning of the summer.
And though Nicole has not spoken directly about her split from Keith, E! News learned she initially tried to save their marriage before ultimately filing for divorce.
But the former couple have found common ground since then. In the divorce filing, obtained by E! News, the Oscar winner and country singer signed off on a co-parenting agreement that proposes their daughters will stay with Nicole for 306 days of the year as the “primary residential parent,” while they will spend 59 days with their dad.
Read on to look back at the moments that led to Nicole and Keith’s divorce.
