One of the films includes the next installment of Tyler Perry’s ‘Why Did I Get Married?’

Oscar-nominated actress Taraji P. Henson has just inked a major two-picture deal with Netflix that includes a reunion with movie magnate Tyler Perry.

Henson, 55, who received her Academy Award nomination for her supporting role in the Brad Pitt-powered film The Curious Case of Benajimin Button, negotiated the fruitful partnership based on the success of her previous projects.

Henson’s track record that led to Netflix deal

Straw was Henson’s first lead role in a Netflix original that premiered in June. The film was a critical and commercial success and spent five weeks on the Global Top 10 Movies, generating 106.3 million views. Straw, which also starred Teyana Taylor, Sherri Shepherd and comedian Sinbad, centers around a single mother who navigates a series of unfortunate events that took her down an unforeseen path where. he mother becomes embroiled in a situation she never envisioned, finding herself at the center of suspicion in an indifferent world. The word “straw” is used as a metaphor to communicate how someone is driven to their breaking point when they are neglected and marginalized in society.

Henson is elated at Netflix deal

Henson is also expanding her behind-the-scenes role in the projects. She will simultaneously star in and operate as a producer on each project under her production banner, TPH Entertainment.

Another Netflix film that Henson will star in, which is separate from her movie deal, will be the resurrection of a Tyler Perry franchise film that was a major hit with urbanites nationwide.

Henson is set to star in Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Again?

The Baby Boy star has heaped effusive praise on Perry in the past for giving her the first lead acting movie roles of her career in the romance drama I Can Do Bad All By Myself in 2009, and the 2018 thriller Acrimony. The first of those movies led to the blockbuster TV series “Empire” opposite Terrence Howard and Jussie Smollett that made Henson a worldwide star for the first time.

This will be the third film in the Why Did I Get Married franchise. Henson will be joined by many of the memorable cast members from the first two films that made the franchise a cult classic, such as Tasha Smith, Jill Scott, Lamman Rucker, Richard T. Jones, Michael Jai White, and Sharon Leal.

New cast members starring in Why Did I Get Married Again? include Armani Greer, Everett Osborne, Da’Vinchi, Laya Deleon Hayes, Jaden Michael, Charles L. Smith, Derrick A. King and Sydney Winbush.

In related news, Henson will also star on Broadway opposite Cedric the Entertainer in the Broadway revival of August Wilson’s Joe Turner’s Come and Gone that will be directed by the preeminent Debbie Allen. The play is scheduled to be performed at the Shubert Theatre in first quarter of 2026.
