COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) -After a deadly attack at a Mormon church in Michigan left four people dead and several others injured, faith leaders and first responders in Colorado Springs are speaking out about safety at local places of worship.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released a statement saying, in part, “Places of worship are meant to be sanctuaries of peacemaking, prayer and connection. We pray for peace and healing for all involved.” Local congregations declined to comment on camera.

Colorado Springs Police told 11 News they maintain close relationships with many faith leaders and continue to monitor for any potential threats. At this time, CSPD says there are no credible threats to churches in the city.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department said its approach is the same for any large building, whether it’s a church, apartment complex or store. “Our priority in any emergency is life safety,” a spokesperson said.

Some churchgoers told 11 News that recent attacks won’t keep them from worship.

“As far as I know, no one’s nervous, no one’s gonna hide, or run away from church, that’s a strong part of all our lives,” said Ryan Abundis, who attends services in the Springs.

Another church member of another denomination, Ashley Allen, said she wasn’t worried either. “I didn’t feel scared or anything. I’m not too nervous to go to church; it’s still a safe place.”

Police and fire officials stress their teams are always ready to respond if an emergency happens.
